I must start saying that there is only one way to became fast, practice, practice and practice.
The best way to practice is doing TT (Time Trial) because you can compare to yourself and see where you can go faster. You can also use a ghost from a faster rider, it will show you where you lose time to him (at beginning I used that and I got some good times because I kept pushing trying to achieve something near the ghost I was using).
Doing TT allows you to know until the limit the tracks and is good because you can do a certain part of the track not having to complete the full lap (use esc buton and cursor. My esc buton is the most shining one on my keyboard).
Go step by step, I mean, learn the turns one by one until you feel confortable with it and repeat from the beginning of the lap pushing hard until the turn you are learning). Do this way until you are doing well the full lap.
I know some riders just have no patient to do this but that's the only way to improve over a track ? even faster riders can always improve their ghosts and that's what keep us playing for so long...
Don't forget that to watch videos from top riders also can help your TT.
There is only one thing on that TT doesn't help. Once you go back to play with other riders you will make some mistakes because of draft, that's normal and you will get used with it in few time (braking earlier compared with TT is all you need).
Once you feel you are about your limit on TT you want to see a nice pb.
For that ou can use human draft (gamespy or private sessions with your mates...) or create your own sessions. For that, choose from game menus: Multiplayer, create session, quick race, select rider, select track, Tab, Edit game mode, choose like 10 laps, All bikes Legend and collisions off, go to end of page and save this configuration so you don't have to do it all again each time you want to create a session.
You are ready now to race using AI's draft. Don't forget that you can use ?esc? button to stop your bike whenever you want (AI's will keep going...). If you want you can split over the track the AI's. For that all you need is to decelerate or even brake in front of them (poor guys).
For draft the tip is to get it more on acceleration. Actually, the draft helps you more on acceleration than on top end speed. For each good drafted acceleration you can earn like 0,2 to 0,3 seconds compared to not drafted acceleration! The slower it is the turn you are doing the helpful the draft is on exiting it (Sepang and Montegi are good examples of good opportunities to get draft on acceleration).
Try to get good draft and stop just before finish line, wait for last AI and when he passes, get his draft, hopefully you get the other AI's draft on the right timming, if not...try again, and again, and again...until you get the pb you was looking for.
Believe me, AI's are good for pb's. I must say that 7 of my pb's were achieved using AI's (Suzuka, Jerez, Donington, Estoril, Rio, Phillip Island and Sheridan...) so don't underestimate the AI's help...
Good luck,
